Foucault has followed the Bentham’s Panopticism designs of prison to describe the ways of distribution of new system of discipline throughout society. The original design of the Bentham said Panopticism prison is one in which all the cells are arranged in a circular pattern around the central watch tower.This is a prime example of modern day panopticism. Michel Foucault originally devised panopticism, when he wrote about Jeremy Bentham's theoretically ideal institutional building, the Panopticon. Panopticism in itself is essentially a model of power, and the relationship of that power between individuals and groups.
Foucault's interpretation of this panopticism is flawed in several respects. The idea of panopticism may said to be a draconian one but we must remember that for a prisoner in the early 19th century, it was much more desirable to be detained in such prison in the dungeons wetlands that existed at that time.
